Try as we might, things don’t always go as planned. Alison and Rich had been in contact with me about photographing their sunrise elopement in Ogunquit Maine for over a year – we discussed all of the tips I send couples interested in the location (I’ve done quite a few of these celebrations in Ogunquit now!) and they’d settled on a date, figured out where they’d stay the night before, and connected with some great vendors who’d help make the day come to life.
And then one of the rainiest June’s in this area’s history happened. And that is no exaggeration, it was literally one of the rainiest Junes this area has ever experienced…ever.
So many days were overcast, wet, and chilly the entire month that weddings were having to roll with the punches all across the industry – including Alison + Rich’s day. But hey, there’s nothing you can do about the rain besides work alongside it so that’s exactly what we did! This was an important location for the couple so while it may not have been the day envisioned, it was in the place they love and will always be able to tie their wedding to as well.
They’d booked a great suite right at the water’s edge at The Beachmere Inn with a covered patio so used that instead of the full outdoors for their ceremony. And we also delayed the start so we could get a little more of the light peeking over the edge of the water as it rose through the haze of the fog. Since the only other guests in attendance were her mom and step-father, they were able to stay warm but still have front row seats as they watched the vows being said from the other side of the patio’s sliding glass doors.
And thankfully we did make that choice because loud bouts of thunder and lightning cracked through the sky at a couple points!
The team of troopers included pros who were well versed in rainy day hair and makeup, and to top it off was an officiant who was game to make sure their ceremony went wonderfully as well.
Before leaving the hotel, Rich grabbed a robe that Alison could throw on in between photos to keep warm but not mess up her hair and off we went to explore Marginal Way in Ogunquit Maine for photos of the two of them.
And even though the day was absent of the sparkling deep blues in the sky, it was still gorgeous!
There was a beautiful quiet due to the lack of the usual tourists walking the path early in the morning, and while the blanket of fog may have removed the blues from the sky, it ended up creating this feeling of being on the shores of Ireland or Scotland with the winds and light rain in the air. And look at those teals in the ocean!
Alison + Rich, I know it wasn’t the plans you were aiming for, but man, it was beautiful nonetheless! I hope you two enjoy your photos and I wish you all the best!
