Weddings in Bar Harbor, with ventures to the top of Cadillac Mountain, and stops along the cliffs that dare you to reach out and drag your fingers across the top of a crashing wave are something I will never tire of.
Each wedding I’ve photographed on Mount Desert Island has been so wonderfully different and the people who’ve chosen this place to start their memory of forever have put their unique touch and view of the day onto this great land – and each one had a feeling that pulled in a different aspect of the island’s character.
The day I spent watching Maggie wed Freddy was most definitely a piece of the island’s heart.
Part of what draws me into Mount Desert Island is it’s quiet gentle nature. It’s tucked away from most of the country and endures long cold winters where most of the island becomes barren, save for the locals who call this their year round home. It’s the time to recharge and rest from the summers where people from all corners of the globe step into this other world called Acadia.
And even once spring and summer start to warm it all over again, or when it’s at is peak and the days are at their longest, the island still manages to give you pockets where you can rest quietly by yourself and sit among the trees or watch the water and feel as if you are sitting on the edge of the world.
This calm, this need for a quiet love that endures the the tests of life and finds ways to bloom even more beautifully is the perfect analogy for love and for the heart. The soul is stretched thin sometimes but with the love of those around us and the strength we have inside ourselves, we grow more beautifully from that strife. And the heart doesn’t discriminate, it loves wholly, it provides infinitely, and it endures.
This heart of Acadia that I love so much, I also saw in Maggie and Freddy.
They are gracious, loving, open. They hold each other close, whisper lovingly in each other’s ears, wrap their arms around one another, and stand unflinchingly at the edge of a cliff hand in hand knowing that the person to their side is there for them no matter what.
We were supposed to have rain all day and flights were even cancelled due to the intensity of the storms leading up to the day so the two of them were concerned we wouldn’t be able to capture the beauty of Acadia – a place they’d fallen in love with (how can you not?) and a place they’d planned from far away for their closest of family and friends. Yet they endured and we made plans to work with the rain if it came, they were content and ready for sunshine or showers.
But when their wedding day arrived it just came with this most beautiful fog that rolled in so thick at times that the top of the mountain was nothing but a ghostly blanket you could quickly disappear into. That fog also brought the newlyweds in closer to one another as they say their vows along the ocean at the College of the Atlantic and as we ventured along the island with five of us riding together up the winding roads and hopping out wherever inspiration struck.
The island’s quiet heart gave us a chill and a soft blanket that hung low against the trees which sent many visitors to the warmth of restaurants and hotel rooms giving us even more of that quiet beauty it is so well known for.
When you’re surrounded by wonderful people like Maggie + Freddy are, that is no doubt a reflection of them. You could see the pure love and joy in each guest’s face during their intimate celebration and see that they too felt this marriage was one that answers the question of “what exactly does love like?”
I love their love and I never wanted the moments to end, but when it did and the day was a wrap as the small group sat together at a restaurant downtown, I left feeling like I’d had a front row seat to beauty on so many levels. It’s a day I won’t ever forget because just like this island, Maggie + Freddy are beautiful in every corner of their heart.
Thank you for bringing us on your day, I wish you all the very best!
