The Light and The Dark – Personal Project of Mine

On a cold wintery March day, my friend Alex and I collaborated together to do what we do best: create. I haven’t photographed something purely for myself in a while and I can’t tell you how good it felt to do this; it also helped to have these amazing women by my side to make it all happen.

I don’t want to go too deep into the meaning to us behind the photographs because I feel like that would be a TON of words and I’d rather just bring the focus to the images. However, I do want to say that this time we spent creating a little bit of art was born out of a need to share with the world that there is so much beauty that lies in the dark shadows of perfection.

I’ve always been repelled by the curation of only the pretty and the singular focus of just showing the world a facade of constant joy – and instead I’m intensely drawn to the grace of a weathered soul and to the ones whose lives are far more beautiful and rich due to their ability to walk through the fire and come out the other side stronger.

It’s important to not only find comfort in both the light and dark sides of ourselves but to also be free from the constraints of only sharing the curated perfect with the world. Perfection is an unsustainable standard and the more we find solace in that and are open about our struggles, the less lonely we become.

We aren’t just beautiful when we’re pristine, we’re also beautiful when we’re ravaged.
