Meredith + Sam have known each other since they were young and they both spent time on Mount Desert Island and Little Cranberry Island so the place holds many memories and stories between the two families. And the first date that Meredith and Sam went on? It was none other than Little Cranberry Island itself so it’s only fitting that this would be where they’d start their forever.
They wanted a Maine feel for the day that included not feeling constricted or stuffy. They wanted to embrace the outdoors and the wildness of an island that sits quietly across from the hills of Acadia and boasts only one restaurant and just a few year-round inhabitants. And a real Maine day is what they got!
Maine brought her best summer storm skills with some deep blue clouds, lots of rain, choppy waters that led to small craft advisories and canceled water taxis, and tons and tons of beauty.
The day was so very unique and tied so closely to the hearts of the couple which could be seen in the way they memorialized loved ones that had passed all too soon, the loving hand of a godmother whose decades of experience in high fashion carefully helped Meredith perfect her stunning wedding gown and veil, and it was in the decor that Rachel Sisson’s team beautifully set up and arranged for everyone to enjoy.
With the waters being so choppy there were long delays in getting guests (and the groom!) across the water to the island so Meredith held down the fort in the Neighborhood Meeting House on the island where her dad gave her tips on the words she’d read, her sister brought in the smiles, and we told her stories of weddings that sometimes just go awry but as long as the couple says I do, then all is right in the world.
Since the day was blanketed with those deep blue clouds and the ceremony was pushed back so guests could attend, light drifted away fast and so when I saw a chance to grab the couple after the raucous and endearing ceremony was complete, I took it and ran! I’d found a spot earlier in the day where the deep greens of the island were offset by the yellow in September’s goldenrods and snapped a few pictures of two people in love before the rain came back in hot and heavy.
From there it was drinks on the dock at the Islesford Dock Restaurant, toasts that brought laughter that moved Meredith’s whole body and dancing to the live band who got everyone ready to party.
The couple brought people from all corners of their lives to this little island off the coast of Maine and showed them exactly what a Maine celebration is all about. It was a day I definitely won’t forget and I’m sure none of the guests will either!
Meredith, Sam and your sweet dog Mabel who I was so ready to steal, I wish you all the best and I send lots of love your way!
